On October 13, a reporter from the Beijing Daily client learned from Sinopec that recently, my country's first 10,000-ton 48K large tow carbon fiber project, the first domestic production line, was put into operation at the Shanghai Petrochemical Carbon Fiber Industry Base, and qualified products were produced. The performance is comparable to foreign products of the same level, and the quality has reached the international advanced level. This indicates that Sinopec's large tow carbon fiber has successfully moved from key technological breakthroughs, industrial trial production, and industrialization to scale and localization of key equipment, breaking the passive situation of my country's carbon fiber production and equipment being controlled by others in one fell swoop, and truly achieving independent control.


In the carbon fiber industry, the number of carbon fibers per bundle is usually greater than 48000 (referred to as 48K) called large tow carbon fiber. The 48K large tow carbon fiber domestic line can realize large-scale and high quality production. The project adopts PAN (polyacrylonitrile)-based large tow precursor and carbon fiber technology independently developed by Sinopec, and is implemented in two stages. It is planned to be completed and put into operation in 2024, with a total production capacity of 24000 tons/year of precursor and 12000 tons/year of large tow carbon fiber.


The large tow carbon fiber has superior performance and is known as the "king of new materials" and "black gold". The large tow carbon fiber developed and produced by Shanghai Petrochemical Company is a new high-strength fiber material with a carbon content of more than 95%. Its mechanical properties are excellent, the proportion is less than 1/4 of steel, the strength is 7 to 9 times that of steel, and it also has the characteristics of corrosion resistance. In addition, the biggest advantage of 48K large tow is that under the same production conditions, it can not only greatly improve the single-wire production capacity and quality performance of carbon fiber, but also achieve low production costs, thus breaking the application limitations caused by the high price of carbon fiber.

The "king of new materials" has a wide range of application scenarios, such as wind energy, solar energy, high-speed trains, aircraft components, etc. For a long time, the development of carbon fiber in China has mainly achieved breakthroughs in small tow carbon fiber, but due to the high cost of small tow carbon fiber, it has affected the enthusiasm of downstream enterprises to apply carbon fiber. The localization of carbon fiber makes the application of carbon fiber in the downstream market such as new energy gradually break out. With the continuous improvement of the application rate of carbon fiber, the related industries will usher in a long-span high prosperity stage, which has effectively promoted the rapid development of related industries and related industries in China. Carbon fiber technology has strict technical barriers. Sinopec is the first company in China and the fourth in the world to master large tow carbon fiber technology. After more than ten years of hard work, my country's carbon fiber has achieved a major breakthrough from 12K to 48K, and successfully achieved a leap in R & D and production technology from quantitative change to qualitative change. Up to now, Sinopec has accumulated 251 patents related to carbon fiber and 46 patents on carbon fiber composite materials, ranking first in China and third in the world.
